Review of Arrival (2016) by Alvaro O — 15 May 2017
Not one of your typical alien encounter films, Arrival chooses to forego the battles, explosions and tropes of more generic sci-fi and instead aims to bend your mind & take you on a ride through the eyes of a linguistics expert who's life experience reveals much more than you might expect.
The telling is masterful and keeps you entertained throughout but gives you enough information to help you grasp its concepts without making you feel like you've been spoonfed.
This film made me wish there were more filmmakers willing to go out on limbs to create unique stories as Villeneuve has done.
