Review of Arrival (2016) by Colby H — 17 May 2017
Arrival stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker. It is about a college professor who is brought in by the military to help translate the unknown language of aliens that have arrived around the earth.
Arrival was a good film for a lot of good reasons. Amy Adams was great. This was one of her better performances. Along with Jeremy Renner who was really good.
The story wasn't you typical alien invasion movie plot. It this one, there isn't any action or humans v aliens sub-genre. This one had a more serious tone to it. It's us trying to communicate with them to try to see why they are here. It's more of what would actually happen if we had visitors from another world. The aliens were brought together with pretty solid CGI. The sound design was a very significant part to this movie.
Everything combined terrified me in all the right ways.
What had me most intrigued was the flow of the story. Almost the whole thing was The protagonists trying to translate the unique form of language. It is what these types of films needed.
Over all, I can see Arrival becoming overlooked in the future, but I still loved every minute of it. 5/5 stars.
