Review of Around the World in 80 Days (2004) by Ned P — 10 Jan 2009
Pitched firmly at the younger market, Steve Coogan's globetrotting adventure is naff in every way, but remains a tolerable ride. Coogan brings a camp edge to Phileas Fogg and just about keeps the film afloat, though he is hardly helped by the supporting cast.
Jackie Chan prefers to play himself rather than Passepartout, while Cecile De France can do nothing in her role as the typical useless heroine. Despite the tackiness of the production, it's difficult not to be drawn in by Jules Verne's narrative, and this partially redeems what is generally an underwhelming adaptation.
