The cinematic equivalent of Malevich's "White Square on White", Kubelka reduces cinema to its most basic units - light and dark - and reveals its nature as movement in time. It is not overly entertaining, but Arnulf Rainer is one of the greatest cinematic achievements of the avant-garde.
