Review of Army of Darkness (1992) by Samantha A — 03 Nov 2012
Though it often feels rushed, Ash's relationship with Sheila is wildly underdeveloped, and most of the comedy falls flat, Army of Darkness remains a campy, over-the-top, fun action/comedy with a great score, memorable one-liners and an enjoyable performance by Bruce Campbell. The first act is great, and the pit scene is simply outstanding. The second and third acts are a bit disappointing, but the ending solidifies the quality of the film. I'm talking about the S-Mart ending, not the post-apocalyptic ending preferred by Raimi and Campbell. That ending is supposed to be funny, but it's actually just depressing and unsatisfying.
Army of Darkness is definitely the best in the Evil Dead trilogy, and I can't wait to see the remake. It is one of the only movies that actually could use a remake, though nobody could ever replace Bruce Campbell as Ash. I hope that the remake of The Evil Dead is successful only because I would love to see a truly outstanding remake of Army of Darkness.
Rating: 7.8/10.
