Review of Army of Darkness (1992) by Trevor R — 22 Oct 2014
A sublimely entertaining blend of slapstick comedy, swashbuckling adventure, and medieval terror. It's a combination that works better here than in the other Evil Dead films-- minimal gore and an actual character arc for Ash are nice changes from the previous entries in the franchise.
There's a streak of giddy immaturity to the whole affair (where a line like "gimme some sugar, baby" can be treated as both campy and triumphant) that I find less appealing the older I get, but "Army of Darkness" is still undeniably fun due to Raimi's singular style and a brashly charming performance by Bruce Campbell.
