Review of Arizona Dream (1993) by Arin D — 21 Jan 2008
A film made with a lot of personal struggle (like Herzog's "Aguirre, Wrath of God"), but well worth the effort. Kusturica tries his hand at an American indie and succeeds. The surrealist flourishes in this film have been adopted by others since, sometimes gratuitiously (Jean-Pierre Jeunet comes to mind).
But here they fit into this dreamy mix of story and sensation, plot and phenomena. The opening sequence sets the mood and Depp's mellow voiceover carries you through a tale of lost people in some dustbowl Arizona town.
Probably Jerry Lewis's last great work..
