Review of Apt Pupil (1998) by Wil R — 26 Oct 2010
Though changing plot devices, characters, and events quitely liberally from the original novella, Apt Pupil is nonetheless a very, very good movie. Criticism from its source material aside, the movie does a wonderful job in pacing itself towards its ends, and stays unpredictable and interesting throughout.
The film employs an excellent model of the transference of evil phenomenon, and is ultimately the principle lesson to be gleaned from the experience. Ian McKellan's top shelf acting steals the show as the aging Nazi, though his chemistry is Renfro is quite notable.
It may not quite be quite like Stephen King's original, but certainly plays well with his ideas.
