Review of Apt Pupil (1998) by Hari A — 26 Aug 2012
Another masterpiece from Different Seasons by Stephen King. I still do not understand the mediocre ratings that this film received, even though the performance by the characters has been stellar, and the story top notch. Kurt Dussander (Ian McKellen) is a retired Nazi war criminal living in US under a false name. His quiet life suddenly turns upside down after Todd Bowden (Brad Renfro) blackmails him. In return, Todd asks him something completely unexpected. His torture memoirs.
A movie that defines pure evil. Dussander and Todd witness surfacing of their killer instincts and the inevitable need to quench their thirst for killing. Ian McKellen performs brilliantly as the evil German Nazi and Brad Renfro is apt in his role as Todd Bowden. However, the movie does not end as it ends in the novel. The ending in the novel is way more sinister and evil, and it should have been followed.
Overall, a brilliant piece of work.
