Review of Appaloosa (2008) by Jack N — 04 Aug 2009
Westerns are just great; whether they are action paced like 2007`s 3:10 to Yuma or humorous like Marvick or serious and dark like Tombstone,my favorite, and Unforgiven. Appaloosa is a mix of the last two types;it is dark and had its funny moments as well and that`s maybe what makes a really good film.
Only the action was the missing element in the film and maybe this is the only drawback but still did not ruin the movie for me. It is never a bad thing to see Ed Harris as the leading man as he got it but sometimes I felt that since he was the producer, writer, and director of the film he was making the movie revolves around his own character.
I know he is the lead but this does not mean shadowing the other characters in many scenes, just a point of view. Anyway, Mortensen did a great job as I expected although his character was a quit one but he delivered well using his facial expresions.
Irons and Zellweger did fine too although I found Zellweger`s character was pretty annoying.I donot know why but I tend to enjoy modern Westerns than classic onesI think that they are more appealing but this is just me;either way if you are a western fan you will like this one alot.
