Review of Appaloosa (2008) by Chris S — 19 Feb 2011
If "Pale Rider" and "Days of Our Lives" had drunken hook-up in an alley behind a dive bar, the genetically-deficient spawn of that sordid union would be "Appaloosa". This is a worn-out plot "freshened" by the injection of an uninteresting and obvious love interest, played by an Renee Zellweger, who appears to have had a swarm of bees sting her face before every take.
The movie is a bore; Ed Harris's "simple but virtuous" portrayal comes off more like "stupid and incredibly dull". Viggo Mortensen and Jeremy Irons are completely wasted (there's a throw-away line indicating that Irons' character is from NY - he can barely contain his English accent.
The line should've been cut). Iron's struggles with the accent are more or less the only thing that kept my attention after the half-way mark.
