Review of Appaloosa (2008) by Casey T — 18 Mar 2011
Ed Harris made a perfectly serviceable western about two stiff eccentric lawmen chasing down an outlaw and learning to live a civilized life. Then awkwardly jams in an incomprehensible subplot involving a love triangle between Harris, Zellweger, and everyone else. Practically every single scene with Zellweger feels like it were spliced in from some other movie and breaks the flow and feel.
On paper the ideas are sound. The lawman bringing peace to the town, settling down, wounded pride in the face of corruption, and exploring ideas of masculinity and femininity. All interesting concepts but the execution stumbles due either to pacing, the inscrutable performances from Harris and Mortenson, or the fact that Zellweger's character and performance are completely unlikeable.
In the end the problem is that I could care less about the relationship around which the drama revolves.
