Review of Apostle (2018) by Tim W — 17 Oct 2018
Eerie atmospheric film in the tradition of great British horror movies of the past. The location, the ensemble cast, the low key supernatural overtones all contribute to a sense of overwhelming dread. It's proper gory though this isn't always well done.
No one can eviscerate a man from throat to stomach using a knife, for example. Michael Sheen and Dan Stevens are both fantastic and given excellent support by the rest of the cast. Ultimately, it's less than the sum of it's parts.
The plot drags at times - it's a long film - and it gets a bit convoluted. Well worth a watch for horror afficianados, just for those performances alone. In fact, it's probably going to merit a second watch at some point.
