Review of Apollo 18 (2011) by Kevin M — 20 May 2012
There was no way I was ever going to like this movie. I'm a big-time space junkie and I've read dozens of books about NASA and the Apollo program. Within the first minute, I could tell that all accuracy was thrown out the window. That would have been fine. It's not a documentary, after all. I have no problem with technical inaccuracies as long as the movie's entertaining. This wasn't. It was an absolute bore. The scares were few and far between and were telegraphed way ahead of the actual moment. The acting wasn't bad, but there wasn't a lot to work with. Astronauts weren't exactly emotional guys, especially under pressure.
I do think that all of the footage looks accurate compared to what we see from the real moon missions. I was impressed with that aspect of the film, although overall I found it extremely lacking. Maybe somebody who doesn't know so much about the program would enjoy it, though. I can't say.
