Review of Mandy (2018) by Kevin M — 25 Sep 2018
I'll gladly give two stars for the effort that went into both Nic Cage's forehead-vein-bursting performance and the art direction. But despite being truly excited to see this, it failed to strike me as anything but a pastiche of clichés.
From stealing dialogue directly from Blue Velvet (and giving it to an inferior character) to the leather-clad Cenobite-ish villains (who are dispatched too quickly, leaving less powerful people for the climax), I saw no originality and long stretches of sadistically boring interludes.
Even Cage's performance harkened back to his earlier unhinged characters but with little empathy generated and nothing interesting to add to his career.
