Review of Apocalypto (2006) by Mikhail B — 01 Mar 2012
A superman horror film shot against the ancient Latin American aboriginal backdrop. Excellent photography of the nature. Excellent choice of the actor for the main role. But the ideology of the film is rather inconsistent: Mel Gibson starts by saying that a weak society destroys itself.
Then we see a wild tribe overcome by Inks' troops, then all the Incas are suddenly frightened by the strength and bravery of the young chief of the tribe and get killed, then the remaining warriors see the approaching European ships, and, as we see it from the modern perspective, are certain to be overcome by the conquistadors.
In other words, each time it's an overwhelming external enemy who is to blame for the obsolete civilisation's fall. That is kind-of-hard to conceive. Well, let's say, only the strong survive, like that aboriginal superman, who conquered them all.
Those in audience who seek undisturbed recreation should take into account the fact that it is, after all, in part an horror movie, so beware of the cut off heads that continue to see what goes on around them, and speaking corpses.
