Stunning and extremely violent, it's Gibson's finest achievement. The spirit of Jaguar Paw (Youngblood) makes this film more than an exercise in technical skill and a how-to on disgusting your audience.
It's refreshing to escape into this Mayan civilization where there are no Hollywood stars or meaningless sex scenes. More of an experience than a history lesson but hey, it's certainly got a pulse.
