Review of Apocalypto (2006) by Jesse B — 18 Jun 2011
A beautifully violent look at the Mayan culture as it begins to destroy itself from the inside. Say what you want about Mel Gibson but I think he is a fine director (though he is nuts). The locations are gorgeous and the violence is extremely realistic, that it hurts sometimes to watch (the guys face getting eaten by the Jaguar! or the heads bouncing down the steps!).
While the idea of "destiny" always annoys me, the film touches on it but does not preach it, which I can handle. I also appreciated a story about a native culture without showing white guys killing the indigenous people.
It was a fresh script that made for a more exciting watch. Don't let Mel's name on the cover scare you...he just directs.
