Only a few years after Gibson got some criticism for blaming the jews for the death of Jesus in The Passion of the Christ he grants the European conquerers in South America absolution for destroying cultures already "rotten in the core".

Beside that I admire the level of passion, research (historical accuracy is maybe not the best but they've done more right than wrong) and detail in the film.

All the sets and make-ups (tattoos, piercings,...) look nice and the use of a native reconstructed Mayan language is extraordinary and highly artistical and unique (especially if you consider today's standards of original ideas and approaches in Hollywood).

Some people may read between the lines to find Gibson's hidden intentions in the film, I settle with a wonderful foot-chase through mesoamerican jungle and a (exaggerated) ridiculous level of gore.

Fast paced and action-packed but not really as touching as it could be. Men will love it for these attributes alone.
