Review of Apocalypse Now (1979) by Charlie D — 24 Jun 2012
I get shit for not really liking this movie all the time. Now, let me explain myself: Apocalypse Now was one of the best movies I'd ever seen until the last, say, half hour. The movie completely falls apart at that point, when it should be at its most intense and climactic.
Marlon Brando sits in a dark corner and mutters to himself for 30 minutes while Martin Sheen just kinda hangs out, strapped against some logs and looking confused. All the while, Coppola is behind the camera dropping 14 tabs of acid before each and every shot.
Now, don't get me wrong. As I said before, the 2-or-so hours before the last act are phenomenal. The acting is flawless, the story is beautifully told (if not a bit disjointed at some points), and the direction is top-notch.
Just be sure to drop it before you get to the end.
