Review of Apocalypse Now (1979) by Bradley W — 27 Sep 2012
Apocalypse Now is Francis Ford Coppola's epic war masterpiece, and is quite possibly the greatest war movie ever made. It truly showed me a definitive view on how war can destroy and corrupt a man, and the protagonist and antagonist of the movie really are so relateable in how they succumb to war.
This seems to be such a deep and thought provoking war film that has been one of my all time favorite films for as long as I can remember. I love the characters, the story, the acting, but I think what makes this movie truly brilliant is the images.
The opening scenes with the burning trees and watching just some of the small details Coppola has put into each scene is simply stunning. Martin Sheen is truly brilliant and blows his performance out of the water, and Marlon Brando gives such a cruel and memorable performance that was one of the highlights of his career in my opinion.
A film like this needs a special award for all the beauty in the filmmaking, I mean when you need to see a example of how to make a film truly beautiful, just watch this film. I have seen some great war films in my time, but I think its safe to say this is the best war film ever made.
Apocalypse Now is such a beautiful movie that truly made me feel a pit of emptiness in my stomach that really left an impact on me, and I am glad others saw the true genius behind the movie like I did.
