Review of Apocalypse Now (1979) by Najd G — 11 Feb 2016
It would be visually stunning if this piece had just been released today. Add in the fact that this was from 1979, and it seems impossibly beautiful.
Its beauty is matched by the intrigue of the plot: for the entire duration of the movie, you knew you were in for one wild climax. But by the time we get there, it feels like the film's direction has been just as undefined and circular as the Vietnam War itself. In a way, that's okay here, because unlike Vietnam, nobody died.
Ultimately, when I reflect on this film, I recognize that it kind of feels like watching a nightmare. And that's the point, isn't it?
