Review of Apocalypse Now (1979) by Joao P — 15 Oct 2012
This is one of those movies that will never be forgotten. I've always loved Apocalypse Now but the whole experience became much more clear after watching Hearts of Darkness: A Filmaker's Apocalypse which demostrates that Apocalypse Now isn't just about Conrad's Hearts of Darkness but it's mostly about the dispear of an artist towards the film industry and the lack of self confidence after one of the greatest hits of all-time.
But thankfully Coppola got away with it, and if he didn't die during the making of this one, or commited suicide, he became surely stronger. Apart from all the bad stuff that happened this is a masterpiece by one of the strangest directors the world has ever seen.
A director that plays by his own rules, that don't have a problem to see Sheen drunk and bleeding and still have the guts to think about what the scene will end up to be. It's above all the other themes, a film about the difficult path to become an artist, instead of merely a director.
A must see feature for all art lovers and one to think about over the years.
