Review of Aparajito (1956) by Greg D — 25 Mar 2012
The film could be titled "Empty Nest Syndrome" because that is essentially the whole of the story. As a young boy Apu's father dies and is raised by his widow mother. Apu receives a scholarship to college and leaves his mother to go study.
He becomes too preoccupied with his work and his studies that he rarely visits her. This sounds like a simple plot line but to the films credit, it is told in a structurally heart wrenching way. You do feel sorry for the mother and you do understand Apu's side (especially as a college boy myself).
The film does lag from time to time however. Slow can be good, but sometimes it cannot be so good.
