Review of Any Given Sunday (1999) by Adam M — 18 Feb 2011
A very entertaining film that I really enjoyed. It is the length that keeps me from rating it higher, like in a lot of Oliver Stone films there is just too much crammed into one film. Jamie Foxx has a very strong performance as a cocky quarterback who lets fame take over his life.
Al Pacino has had so many performances almost exactly like this one. He plays coach D'amato, a passionate coach with no abundance of inspirational speeches. He struggles to deal with the ego of Willie Beamen (Jamie Foxx), being true to his close friend aging quarterback Jack Rooney (Dennis Quaid), and keeping control crazy owner Christina (Cameron Diaz) happy.
Oliver Stone's direction as usual is great, and he uses and ensemble cast very well. Any Given Sunday is a very good film and sport movie classic.
