Review of Any Given Sunday (1999) by Morpheus O — 04 Apr 2011
Although I am not really a football fan, at all, I have to say that this was overall a decent film. One thing, however; at about 2:10 into the film a character from the opposing team looses his eyeball in an important defensive play.
How often does this happen in the game of professional football?! How often has this ever happened in the game of professional football?!? Although this was an important play, defensive for that team, offensive for the team focused on within this film, it's the offensive plays, for the teams and the players of said team on the offensive, that take and get the bigger hits and are the plays more likely to produce the kind of plays where such a thing is much more likely to be possible.
That player was on the defensive... It seems like they played that scene up quite a bit to express the idea that professional football is the gladiator epic expressed elsewhere in the film. That play, not just the type but the way it was filmed, the way that it looked, doesn't seem to meet that kind of standard that professional football is often held up to or actually represents.
