Review of Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2008) by Jamie D — 24 Jun 2010
Great documentary, really heartwarming and touching and hilarious. The thing that sticks about this film is not only its humour but the humanity that it is about. The film just allows you to really connect with "Lips" and Robb and feel different emotions. One minute you could be laughing, the next crying.
This has been claimed as the REAL Spinal Tap. And I would totally agree with this. There's even slight references to that film which left me thinking 'Was that on purpose?' For example, they go to stonehenge. But also, their amp goes up to 11 when they record in the studio. :P Think about it.
It's amazing that these guys haven't got more credit for their metal. I mean, they inspired bands like Metallica for crying out loud. However, there's a moral to their story. As they say quite clearly, it's not about the fame, popularity or the amount of money you make in your lifetime, because that won't bring you happiness. Just being able to live with yourself and have great experiences and stick with the people you love is what life should be about. And that's very true.
I recommend it to heavy metal fans out there, but also to others who like films with great morals and a heart to it. It should make anyone feel good :).
