Review of Anthropophagous (1980) by Vitor A — 05 Jul 2012
A classic of Video Nasty era, sleaze-master Joe D'Amato's Anthropophagus (aka The Grim Reaper, etc.) follows a group of young people who land their boat on a seemingly deserted island. But that is where the similarities to Michelangelo Antonioni's L'Avventura end ; ) Soon, a malevolent force is stalking them.
While the film manages to build a somewhat creepy atmosphere, it just drags way too much before getting into its memorable moments. The film features some striking, gory, and disturbing moments, but they are separated by too much dead space and mostly only come in the film's final moments.
Enjoyable but ultimately underwhelming, Anthropophagus probably doesn't deserve the reputation that it is has developed as a minor cult gore classic.
