Review of Anthropoid (2016) by Steve W — 13 Aug 2016
What should have been an intense thriller turns out to be quite a mess. I did not know what happened to the target in real life, so I walked into this film completely blind. It did not help in the matter.
Cillian Murphy is fine as the more strict agent, but Jamie Dornan was kind of weak. Also, they are forced to have beards for the mission, and then in cliche like fashion both fall in love. It stops things from getting serious, and after the assassination attack the movie falls apart.
The cinematography is shaky and amateurish, not feeling real and in the moment like it was intending to do. Also the final action scene is pretty crazy and has lots going on, but the mistakes are so piled on.
The good guys run out of bullets, but they take out so many German soldiers who walk right into their sights like cannon fodder. All they would have to do is pick up a German weapon and they could have lasted forever.
The grenades didn't seem to be much of a threat, so the movie takes leaps and bounds with artillery logic. The only things I truly liked was the poetic violin music used in juxtaposition with a Gestapo scene, and maybe the assassination attack.
Everything else was just fluff.
