Review of Anthropoid (2016) by Richard S — 21 Jun 2017
It's interesting that every so often 2 films come out covering the subject same at the same time. This one concerns the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich during the Second World War by 2 undercover Czech spies.
The film itself is very much told from the point of view of the Czech spies whereas HHhH which I believe has yet to be released will focus more on the man himself, Reinhard Heydrich. Anyhow, back to Anthropoid, I thought it was a very decent attempt to bring this story to life which I knew very little about.
It moves at a slow pace but it's not boring as it takes time to establish characters, ensuring we care of their fates. The slow pacing of the first half of the movie is in stark contrast to the second which is fast paced and tense as the army close in on the assassins.
The final scenes that take place in the church are particularly claustrophobic and tense as the net begins to close around the assassins. The only downside I felt was it glossed over a little what Heydrich was responsible for which would have given the actions of the assassins a greater impact.
Looking forward to seeing how this compares with HHhH.
