Review of Anthropoid (2016) by Bryson Y — 31 Aug 2016
Its exemplary of the state of the motion picture industry in general that a movie like this - a veritable classic in every sense of the word - gets panned by the critics who cretin together on this website.
That the same morons who are yanking their readers into a tsunami of mediocrity like Suicide Squad then turn around and disparage this masterpiece is, well, what the biz is these days. (Interesting to note how utterly the audience reviews seem to disagree with the critics on this one, which bodes at least somewhat well.
..) Listen, where ever you are, if this film is still playing in your area, drive however far you have to to see it. It may be one of the greatest WW2 films ever made - that is if you're not a "professional" critic with the attention span of a twelve year old with an IQ to match.
Every detail of this movie - from the historical bits (spot on accurate in this entirely true tale) to the acting to the production values, its all handled with a powerful and darksome dignity wholly appropriate to the heroism of its subject matter.
Not easy to present Nazi atrocities in all their appalling depravity without creating a film that inadvertently celebrates that some violence. Not easy to recreate an era so close to recent memory and yet so far off in its sensibilities without descending into period kitsch.
This film walks all those lines with a confidence, skill and high seriousness that I honestly thought was extinct in movies today. If you wanna be numbed into submission by the same old fantastic crapola, go get your fix watching the latest Bourne movement.
If you wanna be aghast and inspired and enthralled by a cinematic art that puts you among real heroes in a hopeless authentically human crisis, go see Anthropoid.
