Review of Ant-Man (2015) by Ben B — 29 May 2018

I went into this movie expecting something average, and that's what I got with Ant-Man. Paul Rudd is one of my favorite comedic actors, and he did a fine job as Scott Lang, but Lang wasn't a character I could really get behind.

Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly did very good work in this movie and were likable characters. The CGI, while inconsistent at times, was pretty cool. As for the music, I didn't have any issues with the score, but it was pretty forgettable like most MCU scores.

This movie had a lot of comedy, but it was also hit-and-miss. There were really funny moments, especially with Michael Pena's character, but then there were times when the comedy felt unnecessary and forced.

What really held this movie back was the villain; I don't know if it was the script or Corey Stoll, but the villain was HORRIBLE. Darren Cross is probably the worst villain in the MCU to this point - his character was very one-dimensional, his motives were illogical, and Stoll's performance was waaaaay overdone.

Finally, while the story was simple, there were some plot holes I found hard to overlook. All-in-all, Ant-Man is a fun popcorn flick with mostly solid performances, but the lack of story and awful villain drags it down.

If you love the MCU and everything about it, you've probably seen this movie. If you want a fun and mostly funny movie you can turn your brain off to, go check it out. However, if you expect a MCU movie on the same level as Iron Man or Civil War, prepare to be disappointed.
