Review of Ant-Man (2015) by Suliman A — 23 Aug 2016
Peyton Reed's darkly humorous sci-fi thriller has so much energy and freshness that it is intoxicating. it concerns a master cat burglar named Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd in a surprisingly strong performance, he brings an endearing charm to his character.
Lang is recruited by a retired genius scientist and former S.H.I.E.L.D. secret operative named Hank Pym, played brilliantly and with conviction by screen legend Michael Douglas who adds a touch of class to this production.
Pym is the creator of an amazing shrinking technology, he wants the reluctant Lang to use his special 'Ant-man' suit that he once donned, that will reduce him to the size of an ant and give him super-human strength, the suit can also control armies of ants through the use of special radio waves which translate his thoughts to insect-speak.
Pym wants Lang to break into his lab and steal his shrinking formula from his former power-mad protege Darren Cross, well played by Cory Stoll, who with Pym's formula poses a massive threat to world security.
Aiding Lang is Pym's badass daughter Hope, wonderfully played by the scene-stealing Evangeline Lilly, she works for the evil Cross, but is secretly on her father's side. The problem is that the sinister Cross has his own lethal shrinking suit, called the 'Yellow-Jacket,' and is hellbent on stopping Lang & Pym from interfering with his nefarious plans.
Astute direction from Reed who gives this engaging sci-fi a real sense of humor and terrific action sequences. The impressive eye-popping CGI visual effects are astonishing. Marvelous supporting performances by Bobby Cannavale, Anthony Mackie, Judy Geer, Abby Ryder Forttson, Michael Pena, David Dastmaichian, and Hayley Atwell.
A spectacular genre film and another winner for Marvel Studios. Highly Recommended.
