Director Mike Leigh has penchant to create realistic characters with the actors he has casted over the decades. I still fondly remember the dramatic realism depicted in his 1996 release of Secrets and Lies.
Another Year lives up to these portrayals, whereupon the viewer becomes intimately acquainted with each of the characters. Lesley Manville, who has acted in several of Leigh's pictures, including Secrets and Lies gives a stellar performance of woman past her prime with diminishing self esteem.
