Review of Another Year (2010) by Amar K — 23 Jan 2011
Masterpiece. Probably, the best movie of last year. Apart from making the obvious remark about unequal distribution of happiness in the world, Leigh does something more disturbing. And suddenly, everything in it becomes questionable. Measured amiability, patient concern as a form of complacency, miserable lives longing for company but not of each other and hence, the reference to Samuel Beckett: "I can't go on. I will go on.".
A movie which has one of the most stalking final shots in the history of cinema is Mike Leigh's chef-d'oeuvre; And he accomplishes this with the personalities, not the attributes.
