Review of Another Year (2010) by Nathan G — 30 Jan 2011
Mike Leigh's 2 main characters Tom and Gerri (Broadbent and Sheen) portray the ordinary life of a middle class british couple. They have a happy marriage and delight in tending their allotment of vegetables year round.
The film revolves around friends and family and acceptance of others faults and failings. This is all ok until Tom and Gerri's family are compromised and embarrassed by their friends behaviour. It is an intricate human study of how our lives may have panned out after divorce/break up etc.
Lesley Manville gives a stellar performance as Mary and the camera/photographers zoom on her face in the final scene is haunting and this alone is worth sitting through the entire film.
