Review of Another Year (2010) by Neum D — 06 Feb 2011
It's a genuine, engrossing film that just observes people... like anything else Mike Leigh does. Leigh quietly allows his characters to be themselves, never weighing them down with clunky, expositional dialogue, and let's things happen.
In a lot of ways, it's like a play adapted into a film, with minimal staging and elongated, "memorable" sequences playing out as touchstones to each season. It can probably be adapted for the stage quite easily, heh.
Thematically, for me, it's like a subtler version of Happy-Go-Lucky in some ways, playing upon the contrasts of attitudes among people who are "blessed" and people who are basically in shambles.
But it never lapses into maudlin territory, and feels more like how the film frames it so obviously: a window into the lives of, and around, these people.
