Review of Another Year (2010) by Matt W — 07 Feb 2011
I've never seen a Mike Leigh movie before but have heard a few speak both fondly and not so fondly of his unique improvisational style of directing. Fans have touted though this to be his best work to date so I thought I would check it out.
'Another Year' is very much about the journey rather then the destination. It's a long slow drive but a scenic at least. There are no forced plot twists, narratives, or climaxes. The story is conversation driven mostly and has a very organic pace.
The rich character development, especially the eccentric Mary played by Lesley Manville kept me entertained and charmed but by the 2 hour mark I was starting to ask myself "are we there yet?".
