Depressing, ponderous, and poorly paced, but relatable for any singles in the audience. Imelda Staunton is wasted after she disappears within the first half hour of the film. I utterly hated Mike Leigh's previous attempt, Happy-Go-Lucky, with its over-the-top obnoxiously cheerful protagonist, so it should not be a surprise that I didn't care for this long descent into melancholy either.
There were some redeeming moments, particularly those scenes that featured Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen, but overall this movie was a solid waste of two-plus hours. Perhaps I would have appreciated it more if Mr.
Leigh had cut about a half hour of empty-but-meant-to-be-meaningful stares from it.
