Review of Another Year (2010) by Bank K — 13 Mar 2011
More vintage Mike Leigh. One of his best. As usual his direction and writing produces an unparalleled representation of authentic real life. The story depicts a year in the life of a set of ordinary people within which nothing above the ordinary really happens.
But he captures it so perfectly that we are drawn into this world and its characters. The effect is in no small way helped by the actors that he repeatedly chooses for his films. Lesley Manville gives the performance of her career and given a different set of circumstances she could be as famous as Meryl Streep.
She is at least as talented if not more so. To present the ordinary so realistically is a rare talent. Mike Leigh and Lesley Manville together are unbeatable in this regard.
