There is no better director on the planet than Mike Leigh for eliciting brilliant performances from actors. This movie is a pleasure from start to finish. I never tire of Leighs mixture of wrenching tragedy and comedy.

He invariably creates characters who are on the margins socially and their isolation leads to self destructive behaviour. There are also characters in this movie that are grounded, loveable and loving.

Leigh is one of contemporary cinema's great humanists. He views the world through a compassionate lens. Utterly wonderful!!
