Review of Another Year (2010) by Artha B — 19 Apr 2011
Mike Leigh's films are one of a kind. You spend the first half of the film waiting for a plot to kick in and then by the time you realise there isn't one you're so interested in the characters that you don't care! This film is split into four chapters (the seasons), each lasting about 1/2 hour each.
They're almost miny playlets but focus on characters in the life of Tom and Jerry (Broadbent and Sheen). Manville is brilliant as Mary, Sheen's desperate work colleague. She's an unlikable character due to her desperation but by the end you can't help but pity her.
It is another classic character, like Blethyn in 'Secrets and Lies' or Hawkins in 'Happy Go-Lucky' that can irritate but also bring the film alive. Everyone else in the film is great too but you miss Manville when she's not on screen.
