Review of Another Year (2010) by Kase V — 03 Jul 2011
I really liked "Another Year", for two main reasons: 1) superb acting by the three main characters (Jim Broadbent, Lesley Manville, and Ruth Sheen); and 2) an engaging, affecting slice-of-life story somewhat in the manner of a Robert Altman film.
I thought Broadbent's performance was remarkable -- he just lit up the screen, sometimes without saying a word; and Manville was so sadly persuasive. The movie is very British in its feel and texture -- this is a quality that I enjoy (see also: "Cemetery Junction"), but I suspect it may prove to be a big cultural barrier for those who haven't lived in Britain.
