My understanding is that Mike Leigh reviewed character with each of his leads and allowed them to take the dialogue where they saw fit. What results in a very moving portrait of middle aged couples and the way in which they reveal them to colleagues.
A great addition to the canon. Topsy Turvy aside, I am still a fan.
