Review of Another Earth (2011) by Michael M — 15 May 2012
This low budget, indie film directed by Mike Cahill is an almost poetic philosophy about redemption, second chances and parallel lines. Another Earth becomes visible in the sky around the same time a bright young women drunkenly runs head on into a family in a car.
All are killed but the father and the drunk girl driving. The young girl, Rhoda Williams, gets out of jail and desires to make amends with the father. But how does she tell him? Oh, what a sad, sad movie this is.
And yet, the other planet in the sky gives us some plausibility of hope but we are still not sure. The ending definitely opens up room for discussion but contains a lot of loose ends. Still, the audience is enamored with the completative treatment of the theme and the characters that we hold out empathy for.
