Review of Anonymous (2011) by Todd G — 14 Feb 2012
Once you accept that this is a historical fantasy about Shakespeare, the movie's tragic overtones win the day and the political thriller involving an Earl, the Queen, her advisers and the rabble on the South Bank sort of work.
While Emmerich over does it (as always: Incest!? Really?), the interplay of alliances and devotions keeps this tale moving until the final unraveling in tragedy.
Probably panned by critics who thought the director was serious about the theory that Shakespeare's works were written by a noble.
