The movie starts out as a confusing mess. There are essentially four modes of flashbacks, two of which have nothing to do with the actual story being told. That said, however, once the film settles down you can't help but be intrigued not only by the fun they had with the conspiracy theory but also the politics and jealousies of Elizabethan England.

The film is greatly aided as well by a fantastic performance by Rhys Ifans (I'm still finding it hard to believe that the Duke of Oxford was actually the chain smoking punter from "The Replacements") and Rafe Spall who played Shakespeare (a surprisingly small character in the Labyrinth of the plot) with great comedic/cunning skill.
