The long running conspiracy theory that the guy from Stratford called Shakespeare didn't actually write the plays is given a run out in this occasionally entertaining film that sags a little in the middle.
It seems that the Earl of Oxford Edward de Vere was using his precocious talent to manipulate the secession of Queen Elizabeth. Royal intrigue, murder and incest follow, just like one of the plays in fact.
Controversial and Derek Jacobi and Vanessa Redgrave, Shakespeare alumni both, should know better.
