Review of Anomalisa (2015) by Wayne M — 20 Feb 2016
Anomalisa is the work of creative genius Charlie Kaufman. Like all of his works it is surreal, sad and full of questions. But this unique film has a special difference. It is filmed with stop motion puppets, which actually make you focus even more on the works spoken.
And what words they are. They probe the human soul, questioning our connections, our wonder, our loneliness. It is sad and thoughtful but also full of strange touches that can be both confronting and hilarious.
They are only three voices. Michael, a lonely man in Cincinnati for a conference and Lisa, also lonely and in town for the same reason. Their connection is so beautifully handled and so full of grace it will stay with you long after you leave the cinema.
Kaufman makes film that matter and this is no different. The ending feels a little abrupt but this is cinema at its probing best.
