Review of Annihilation (2018) by Wayne M — 21 Jun 2018
Annihilation sadly didn't receive a cinema release outside of the US. For it is a bold, original, intelligent work that does a great job of alerting all of the senses. It's part psychological drama.
part horror and part science fiction. It's a strong robust film that delivers with expert ease. It also has a mainly female cast that is strong and powerful, Headed by biologist Natalie Portman whose husband goes missing for a year presumed dead.
When he turns up it is discovered he has been sent to a natural phenomenon called 'The Shimmer'' where people go and don't come back. When the band of women enter they encounter a world of strange auras and fantastical creatures.
Without giving anymore away it's a gripping film that trades in some horror but also provides moments of breathtaking beauty. It's a film that operates on many levels, giving plenty to think about while you are enjoying the thrills that abound.
